LETTER
From my earliest memories, I loved technology. I understood, almost before I took my first class, how things worked. I love reading directions when the products show up at my home or lab. I love the idea that technology can resolve people’s problems or even make a whole company or the whole world better.
I also understand the concepts of purpose and curiosity and how they are related. No one is quite sure on any given day they are doing exactly what they might have been created to do, but the thing that distinguishes really interesting people from those who feel like victims of boredom, is they share my passionate curiosity and search for reason. Why is money more important than a clean and fair world? I think we can have both and that technology can either help or hinder that objective.
So, though I have always had an instinct for how things work, for physics, and chemistry, etc. I’m even more interested in the why of technology, in history, present advantages and limitations of technology, and the future, which I envision as the most exciting of the three. I hope you do too -- if you don’t you will with this and future issues of PT Magazine.
I trust this issue and all issues of Popular Thechnology Magazine manfest this search for meaning and excitement of what could be. Thank you for joining me on this hourney.

What Tech can really do about it
The Rising water
A new phone app measures the heat and txicity produced by local and worldwide factories.
A GPS program tells you the politician and other officials and organizations to contact to report CC offenders.
How to make dirty clean again
We a literally pooping in our own fishbowl.
Unlike Goldfish, we can decide where to put the toilets, filters, etc. to keep pourselves clean.
And we have a great role model in the way our earth operates in synergy.
“Filters” were built into our soil and sky. We’ve just overwhelmed them by making waste with no responsibility.
So, from now on, if one member of the “family” overflows the toilet, that member either cleans it up, or pays to clean it up, or stops using our earth as a toilet, but law and force when necessary.
We have to put cooperation over capitalism without calling it communism. All global players have to play fair.

What pop Tech can really do about it
Charge what it Costs
No longer is the earth a dump for companies whose profit margin requires free dumping in the air, land, and water. If you mess it up, clean it up, just as momma taught you!
Only 9% of all plastic is recycled. Here’s a bacterial solution.
Impossible? It was once thought impossible we cold build a bomb that could destroy us all or kill entire oceans with mercury and other wastes or over-fishing or global warming.
It’s not impossible to clean it up if those who pollute it contribute to solutions that work.
Any one person who poops in the fishbowl is responsible to clean it up.
Let’s do the math (it’s not impossible):

Climate change
What pop Tech can really do about it
The math is simple
If you make a global warmring product, you have to filter it to stop the negative impact. IN other words, for ever3y negative there has to be a positive or you can’t make it.
Burn coal; capture the soot and heat.
Burn petroleum; capture the waste and heat.
If you’re smart, you make money on this capture, from the waste, etc.
Scouring the planet with celestial vacuums
You make something people throw out? You have to make sure they get it back to you for recycling. Or you can’t make it.
It’s not impossible. It’s just responsibility.
Plastic might go away in its present form for holding groceries, for example. It’s only cheaper because those making it aren’t responsible.
Rich has to mke right. Get rich making things that make the world better -- not just in one way, but in all ways. You make a lithium car? You take care of the lithium waste.
Same with “green” tjhings like solar. You don’t get to make it and forget it anymore.
If you haven’t figured out how to clean up your mess, you can’t make the mess.

Climate change
What pop Tech can really do about it
The math is simple
We can get away with a lot.
We can fly airplanes and drivee cars. We can transport food; but huge food conglomerates hare responsible for the effects of transporting, cooling, packaging of food. Perhaps Big Food has to start farming and selling more locally to be profitable. They don’t get to bully the planet; they get to make it better for profit There is a difference.
So what’s the math?
We need to look at all producers of waste; not just the largest ones.
This needs to be mathematically fair.
Ranked waste producers and their present wealth and profit margins.
The above with mechanisms to be res;ponsible for thier own waste.
